The “Law on the Federal Office for the Security in the Information Technology” (“Gesetz über das Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik – BSIG”) rules that owners of “critical infrastructures” (e.g., IT and telecommunication companies, energy producers, drinking water suppliers, health care institutions etc.) must make reasonable organizational and technical efforts to avoid any disturbance of their IT-Systems. If this obligation is neglected then a fine of up to 50,000 EUR can be opposed, § 14 BSIG.
