Richard Owens has acted on behalf of many technology companies, financial institutions, and others in technology-intensive transactions, including licensing, strategic alliances and joint ventures, privacy, financing, outsourcing, electronic commerce, public-private partnerships and Internet issues.  Before joining Blakes, he was executive director of the Centre for Innovation Law and Policy, University of Toronto Faculty of Law. 

He has been repeatedly recognized as one of Canada’s leading technology lawyers, and he has written and published widely. 

Mr. Owens is a past chair of the board of directors of the University of Toronto Innovations Foundation, and serves on the advisory committee to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.  He is on the advisory board of the Center for Innovation Law and Policy at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, and is an ITechLaw director.

He is a member of the Advisory Council of the Identity, Privacy and Security Initiative at the University of Toronto, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Intellectual Property Committee, the American Bar Association, the International Bar Association and ATRIP (International Association for the Advancement of Teaching and Research in Intellectual Property).
