James G. Gatto

Mr. Gatto leads Pillsbury's Intellectual Property group and co-leads the firm's open source team and its Virtual Worlds & Video Games team. His combination of IP experience and business insights helps companies develop IP strategies that are aligned with their business objectives. His practice is international and focuses on all aspects of intellectual property, including patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, open source and Internet law.
Prior to joining Pillsbury, Mr. Gatto headed the IP practice for Mintz Levin's Reston and Washington offices, and was co-chair of the firm-wide IP Section. He has been in the intellectual property field since 1984, when he started as a Patent Examiner in the electro-optics area. He has had leading roles in a number of patent-related legal and industry organizations.
Mr. Gatto is ranked as "AV" by Martindale Hubbell Law Directory, the highest rating, and he was voted one of the top IP/IT attorneys in Virginia by Virginia Business Journal Survey, among other honors.
Mr. Gatto is a frequent speaker in the U.S. and internationally, and he has authored many publications. He received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, and a B.E. in Electrical Engineering (with a Physics minor), from Manhattan College. He is admitted to the bar in the Commonwealth of Virginia and District of Columbia, and to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the Court of Federal Claims and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
