Michael Schmittmann is partner in Heuking Kühn Lüer Wojtek, Düsseldorf, one of the top 15 law firms in Germany with approximately 220 professionals. He attended the law school at Cologne and Geneva. 1987 to 1989: Consultant in the European Commission in Brussels with an emphasis on the Directive “Television without Frontiers”. He has been in professional practice in Düsseldorf since 1989 in the area of telecommunications, broadcasting and IT law.
Mr. Schmittmann represents prestigious broadcasters such as CNN, Eurosport, Discovery/DMAX. He has successfully represented telecommunications licence applicants (UMTS auction in Germany in 2000, WLL frequency bidders in 1999 and DVB-T applicants in 2006). Involved in the German cable market, he has most recently negotiated the framework agreement between copyright holders and ANGA (Association of network operators). Leading expert in satellite matters due to longstanding client relationships with operators over years (SES ASTRA), today representing EUTELSAT S.A. Mr Schmittmann's emphasis is on regulatory work, contract law and business transactions in the area of communications and now converging markets such as mobile TV, IPTV. In IT, besides outsourcing and software agreements, his experience covers IT litigation and arbitration.
Mr. Schmittmann is head of the ▪ IP ▪ IT ▪ Media ▪ Practice Group of his firm consisting of 30 professionals. He is member of the supervisory board of Airweb AG, Paris/Mönchengladbach and is lecturer at the University of Hanover in the LL.M. IT program.
