Michael Schmittmann is head of his firm's IP ▪ IT ▪ Media Practice Group. He attended law school in Cologne and Geneva. From 1987 to 1989, he worked as a Consultant in the European Commission in Brussels, with an emphasis on the Directive "Television without Frontiers." He has been in professional practice for more than 20 years in the area of telecommunications, broadcasting and IT law.
Mr. Schmittmann represents prestigious broadcasters such as CNN, Eurosport, and Discovery. He has successfully represented a number of telecommunications license applicants (UMTS auction in Germany in 2000, WLL frequency bidders in 1999 and DVB-T applicants in 2006). Involved in the German cable market, he has represented a number of rights holders in the framework agreement with ANGA (Association of network operators). A leading expert in satellite matters due to his longstanding client relationships with operators over the years (SES ASTRA), today he represents EUTELSAT S.A.
Mr. Schmittmann's emphasis is on regulatory work, contract law and business transactions in the area of communications, and now converging markets such as mobile TV and IPTV. In IT, beside software projects and agreements, his experience covers IT/Copyright litigation and arbitration for an international clientele.
He is a member of the supervisory board of Airweb AG, Paris/Mönchengladbach, and he is a lecturer at the University of Hanover in the LL.M IT program EULISP.
